After the Tea Party

Young Tea Party ProtesterOn Wednesday, thousands of
Minnesotans came out to protest government spending, high taxes, bailouts and
expanded intrusion into our lives.  Media estimates of the crowd at
the St. Paul Tea Party ranged from 2,000 – 10,000.  We put the
number closer to 7,000, which is still a huge turnout for a rally in April.

These Tea Parties are grassroots
movements stemming from a public concern about the path our country seems to be on.  Most of us have no desire to become Europeans.

We intend to help keep this
movement moving forward.  Lovers of free enterprise and liberty
must band together and fight to keep America the country our forefathers
envisioned.

MN Tea Party Coverage
The Tea Party was a huge success. Thousands gathered Wednesday in St. Paul and around the state
to demonstrate their frustration with the current direction the nation is
taking. The event, held from 5-8 yesterday, featured a wide variety of speakers
from different organizations all rallying around the cause of smaller government
and preservation of individual liberties. The media coverage was excellent along
with many individuals posting pictures and videos from the event. Here are some links to the state coverage below. Many, many blogs also covered the event and some of the best coverage of greater Minnesota tea parties can be found there. You can find a representative sample with cross posted links at True North.

The Sizzle of Economic Freedom and Fizzle of Minnesota

Donate buttonMost Minnesotans don’t realize what restrictions on their economic
freedom are costing them. If they realized the benefits that would flow
to them with more economic freedom, they would be beating down the
doors of the legislature demanding not just a stop to proposed
government curtailment of their right to economic liberty, they would
be demanding back the freedoms that have been taxed and regulated from
them. That was the message Dr. Lawrence J. McQuillan, director of Business and Economic Studies delivered this week at a lunch sponsored by the Minnesota Free Market Institute. Using data collected as part of the U.S. Economic Freedom Index
and other studies that rank states based on their degrees of economic
freedom, Dr. McQuillan dubbed Minnesota a “4th quintile state”: On the
key competitive rankings of state borrowing, taxes, spending,
regulations and legal climate, Minnesota consistently ranks well below
average.Read More

CNN hated the Tea Parties. Here’s the evidence on You Tube. Reporter Susan Roesgen tries to brow beat one of the one of the protesters, a young father and then complains that the protest isn’t “family friendly.”  Former Clinton Labor Sec Robert Reich weighs in at the Huffington Post with “A Short Citizens Guide to Kooks, Demagogues and Right Wingers on Tax Day.”

Nouriel Roubini. “‘Stress Tests’ are Really ‘Fudge Tests.‘” “Dr. Doom” NYU Economist argues that the baseline economic indicators for the FDIC bank “stress tests” (meant to test the stength of individual banks) are already obsolete, making the stress test a phony exercise. It’s geared to making sure that all the banks “pass” it.

As if we could forget, this past Wednesday was also Tax Day. The Cato Institute’s video of the week is a compliation of several of their scholars’ critiques of the U.S. Tax Code.
